Spring Fair

Kate Knight

I travelled down to Birmingham yesterday to visit the Spring Fair. It was really great having a look around all the exhibitors stands, as well as getting an opportunity to talk to a number of fellow artists.

I spent most of the day with the Scottish artist Ailsa Black. Ailsa paints beautiful artwork and her paintings are used to make cards, calendars and a growing range of lovely products. Her animal prints would brighten up any home. On Ailsa’s website she states “I hope to capture the happiness and simplicity of the good things in life”, which is exactly what she does. I had heard so much about Ailsa from other artists that when I met her at the show it felt as if we already knew each other. We both had a great time walking around the show. I knew artists that Alisa didn’t and vice versa. It is so important to make the effort to communicate with other designers that are working within the industry. You learn so much from each other.

We have promised to stay in touch and let each other know what shows we are attending. Ailsa is from Dumfries and Galloway and I loved hearing the Scottish accent again. It reminded me of a very close friend from home who I had been missing this week, so it was a delight spending time with her.

A company I always like visiting at the Spring Fair is run by my friend, Berni Parker. I tried to pop on to their stand say hello but unfortunately every time I walked past they were too busy to speak to me - which was good for the business, but a shame I missed out on saying a quick hello. I also saw a number of my other favourites, such as DM Collection, Susan Entwistle and Louise Tiler. Finally, it was really great getting a look at the products produced by one of my all-time favourites, Pip Studio. Their use of colour and pattern can only be described as magical.

I would like to finish off by thanking Ailsa Black for making it such a great day – I owe you a lunch so we will have to do it again soon.
